My new sounds: A Sunday afternoon stop by the Minnesota Music Cafe.

Coffee class. Sounds like a kind of dull way to spend a beautiful Saturday summer afternoon.
But Andrew Kopplin managed to prepare a succinct, and persuasive overview of coffee production, from history to cultivation, through roasting techniques to the fine points of brewing.
Amazingly, Andrew manages to impart all of this information without seeming the least bit, well, snobby about it. He’s a natural at teaching what he knows, and does it with an understated affection.
If you want to know the cause for all those bad cups of coffee you’ve encountered at the office or other nameless places, including your kitchen, this is a class for you.
Andrew hopes to offer it once a month, with the expectation of taking a break for the birth of his baby in the fall. You can find the next date on our calendar at St. Paul SPOT.
What better way to spend a record breaking 101 degree July 4 than a two hour trip down the Mississippi on board a Margarita Cruise. You can hop on this delightful and sociable river happy hour twice a week - Wednesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 (arrive an hour early for an extended opportunity to suck down the 2 for 1 Margaritas) Blended and highly charged strawberry drinks were the flavor of the day. But you can opt for a calmer drink - beers, G & T, and other usual bar pours available. Despite the white hot sun, the apparent wind of the upstream journey kept us suitably cool The turnaround journey was better spent at the gratis taco bar indoors. What’s not to love about a couple hours on the river, watching jet skiers, pointing out urban landmarks, and best of all, shooting the breeze with Captain Bob.
Vine Park Brewing Company hosts a monthly beer and cheese tasting during the slow summer beer season (did you realize summer is slow for beer brewing?) This is a great way to taste the varieties of beers that you can brew for yourself - in fall, of course. Cheese pairings courtesy of Mississippi Market. Free massages courtesy of Parkview Chiropractic. Hot sunny evening courtesy of …..climate change. Stay tuned for next month’s tasting. And check check out their FREE beer tasting Brews Cruise on August 9. 25 tickets were still available as of this evening.

Day two of Literary St. Paul.
A small group gathered last night for the inaugural Kopplins book club meeting and discussion of ”American Terroir”. Making up for the small numbers was the intense passion about the book, both the writing and the topic. To sweeten the evening, Andrew Kopplin passed around samples of Rogue Chocolate (Venezuela and Madagascar - can you taste the difference?) featured in the book. The tension between terroir and sustainability was the evening’s theme.
On the table for next month - “Leaving the Atocha Station” by Ben Lerner. The highly praised book is locally produced by Coffee House Press. Buy a copy at Kopplins, check it out from the library. Even Kindles are welcome.
Tonight (day 3) leads me to the Jewish Community Center in St. Paul for a reading of Myra Goldberg’s “The False Friend.” Hope to see you there.
