St. Paul’s got gardens

Flashback to a European family reunion, circa 1960’s, and a jet lagged descent into Schipol Airport, where even my jaded 13 year old know-it-all eyes were opened by the vision of well tended rows of agriculture lining the perimeters of the runway.

Today, the vision of gardeners tending plots off the Ayd Mill Road ramp bring me back to those early days of comprehension about the precious commodity of well tended land.

Here’s the St. Paul part of a map of Twin Cities gardens, courtesy of Gardening Matters.

On a recent trip to the Black Dog cafe, I came across these urban gardeners from the Tilsner Building tending a plot. Warned against cultivating edibles due to possible soil contamination from surrounding construction, they are cultivating a plot to nurture migrating butterflies.

Say this all the time, but really mean it this time. The best deal in town. Check out the Summit Brewery tours, available several times a week. The tour guides lead you through the process of brewing beer, from hoppy copper kettles, to fermenting tanks, filtering, and bottling and kegging. Stay afterwards for several hefty size portions of your choice of Summit’s many brews, and get to know the Minnesota nice crowd while exchanging critiques (though not sips….gross) of the foamy brew. Oh, yes,and it’s free. That’s a popular word in St. Paul. Reservations were surprisingly easy to come by. Might go back again this week…..
